Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach out to info@blackflagbodyarts.com if you cannot find an answer to your question, we're happy to help!

We have opted not to use the phone for client correspondence for a couple of reasons, actually! Generally speaking it's because we are not often available to answer the phone while busy with clients, and part of providing a calm and relaxed environment to get pierced in is not hearing a phone ringing in the background. We have also found that often the messages left do not include important information for calling back, and we don't want anyone to go ignored.

If you send us an email though, we're usually very quick with replying. If your question is urgent or time-sensitive, please state as much in the subject line to ensure you get a reply ASAP.

Yes, we are by appointment and booking online is super easy through the menu at the top left of the page! Email us if you have any trouble with booking, we are happy to help!

You can drop by without an appointment just to buy saline, or to book a spot in person. If you just want to have a look at jewelry, we will do our best to accommodate questions you might have but booked appointments always take precedence and we appreciate your patience if there's a bit of a queue until we can help you. Please consider that "just buying jewelry" is not always as straightforward as it seems, and the more information you have about the size and style you need the easier it is for us to help without an appointment booked. "The small one" or other similar descriptors do not help as there are many sizes available in each style, in increments as small as .3mm. If you know what size in mm or inches you need, or have an account with us we can look up what you have purchased previously for direct replacement. All jewelry purchases are final sale, so we want to make sure we get you the right stuff!

Please email us for any emergencies, medical or otherwise, and we will do our best to get you in ASAP

You can book an appointment via the button on our homepage, by clicking here to get to our booking page, emailing us, or stopping by the studio in person.

If you need to pay your deposit with debit or cash, you must come to to the studio during business hours to book.

If you want to book for multiple people on the same day, please email us to get your spots booked as closely together as possible. We will need the names of everyone wanting to book, we will need to know what each of you wants to book for, and we will need a deposit for each piercing appointment (no, you won't be able to book 2 or 3 spots with only one deposit down).

We take a $60 deposit at the time of booking, and are not able to hold any spots without a deposit.

  • We require 24hrs notice to cancel or reschedule and receive a refund or transfer the deposit to the new appointment time
  • We have a 10min late policy, which means if you are more than 10min late we may need to reschedule you to another day, and you will need to pay another deposit for the new appointment. It is possible in appointments booked for multiple services that we will only have time left for some of them. Let us know if you're running late and we will do our best to accommodate within reason
  • If you do not have adequate ID, you will forfeit your deposit that day and will absolutely will not pierce without ID

There are certain extenuating circumstances we will work with you on for last minute cancellation, please let us know with as much notice as possible and we will do our best to accommodate!

For most piercings, you can sign for yourself without a parent at 16. Any nipple or genital placements are 18+, absolutely no exceptions. You'll find minimum age requirements listed next to each piercing service on our booking page but please note that valid ID is REQUIRED for any fresh piercing, at any age. Minors must have a care card or birth certificate along with valid ID for their parent or guardian who is signing for them.

We will not pierce without appropriate ID, please feel free to email if you're not sure about the ID you have. If you arrive without adequate ID, you will forfeit your deposit and need to pay another to rebook.

We recommend 8-12 weeks (or 2-3 months) before submerging your fresh piercing in baths, pools, hot tubs, lakes, rivers, or the ocean. A key component is keeping your wound dry while healing as much as possible, and minimizing exposure to bacteria-rich environments. Showering is absolutely okay, clean running water is helpful for healing! But spending time in bodies of water teeming with bacteria is almost certain to be problematic for healing.

Physical activity isn't usually problematic so long as the piercing isn't getting caught or squished in the process, but organized sports which require the removal of jewelry are not friendly for healing piercings. If you are part of a team which will need your jewelry removed for games or practices, it's better to get pierced in the off season.

Downsizing refers to shortening the length of the jewelry used initially. Fresh piercings (like any other wound) will swell at first, and as healing progresses the swelling will come down. We use longer jewelry initially to accommodate for that swelling, but when the swelling comes down the jewelry often feels too long or in the way (getting caught in hair, clothing, towels, or uncomfortable to sleep on, for example). But once the swelling comes down, we can put some shorter jewelry in! Not everyone chooses to or needs to downsize, but that is best discussed with your piercer to get the best information as it applies to you in your healing process.

As far as cost goes, if you choose to downsize the cost of each post/bar is $30-40. We do not charge a service fee for sterilizing or installing the jewelry, and your existing beads or gem ends will fit onto your shorter bar if purchased from us. Plus, you keep your longer jewelry which may be usable in the future for other piercings on yourself, if the style and size is suitable for what you want to pierce, for a $20 reprocessing fee!

It is worth noting that jewelry is a lot like underwear in that it is only for use with a single person, no sharing with friends or family when reusing pieces.

When a piercing is anatomy specific, it just means that not everyone will be able to receive the piercing. Bodies come in all shapes and sizes, so if you have booked for a piercing which states that it is anatomy-specific it is best to either come with a backup piercing in mind or book a free consultation first if there are no other piercings you would be happy with instead.

If you do not have the anatomy for the piercing you'd like, you don't have a backup option in mind, and you didn't come in for a consultation first, please note that you will forfeit your deposit for that appointment.
